Sweden goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl operated – will miss the European Championship qualifiers

The Swedish Football Federation (SvFF) have announced that the national team goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl has been operated for a meniscus injury and will therefore miss the upcoming European Championship qualifiers against Hungary (September 17) and Iceland (September 22).

The 37-year-old goalkeeper plays on a daily basis for the Spanish top club Atlético Madrid,  a club she joined earlier this year from German champions Vfl Wolfsburg.

The Swedish national team doctor Houman Ebrahimi says in a comment on the association’s website:

“The medical examination carried out in Hedvig’s club team, Atlético Madrid, showed that she had sustained an injury to the meniscus that needed to be repaired with an operation. The operation was performed in Madrid during the day (Friday) and the medical team in Atlético Madrid announces that the operation has gone well. Hedvig will now begin her postoperative rehabilitation and we look forward to her recovery.”

Lindahl herself took to social media to announce that she will stay home in Spain:

So, instead of preparing for work with @swewnt I will be stuck sidelined a bit. I will use that time to learn Spanish and watch our beautiful game to be fully prepared tactically once back. Hopefully I still heal quickly, because I am so looking forward to be part of taking @atletifemenino back to where the club belongs in @primeraiberdrola. First day of recovery starts now!

Sweden head coach Peter Gerhardsson says:

“It is of course unfortunate news for us but above all for Hedvig herself. Injuries are one of the saddest parts of football and we of course send our thoughts to Hedvig and the family in Madrid and wish good luck with the rehabilitation.”

IK Uppsala’s goalkeeper Emma Holmgren replaces but it is in first hand Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC’s Jennifer Falk and Zećira Mušović from Swedish champions FC Rosengård who will fight for the goalkeeping spot in the starting lineup.
