The FA Women’s Super league club Arsenal announced during the Wednesday that they have signed the Australian international goalkeeper Lydia Williams from Melbourne City, the current W-League champions. Williams is signed on a one year deal until 2021.
The 32-year-old has a huge international experience playing for several top clubs across the world from National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the U.S (Chicago Red Stars, Reign FC, Houston Dash) to to the Damallsvenskan in Sweden (Piteå IF). Besides Melbourne City in Australia she has also played for Canberra United, where she started her senior career back in 2008.
For Australia, she has played 88 international appearances for Matildas and in Arsenal she will join fellow Aussie and Matildas colleagues Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord.
“I remember watching Arsenal as a young kid, so It’s amazing to be a part of this team. I can’t wait to meet all of my teammates.” Williams told Arsenal.com.
Head coach and fellow Aussie Joe Montemurro said: “This is another really important signing for us…With the wealth of experience that Lydia brings, she can help the younger players that we’ve got, but more importantly she’s a big game player that will be solid and really contribute to the group.”
