The newcomers in Spanish top division Primera Iberdrola, SD Eibar, have signed South African star Thembi Kgatlana, the club announced during Monday.
The Banyana striker was named African Women’s Footballer of the Year in 2018, a year when Kgatlana also left South Africa and University of the Western Cape to join the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Houston Dash. The year after, in 2019, she headed to China and Beijing BG Phoenix until she in early 2020 signed for the Liga BPI club SL Benfica in Portugal, a club she didn’t play many matches for before the coronavirus outbreak.
The 24-year-old has played over 50 senior matches for her country and was part of the squad in the 2019 World Cup, a tournament which the South African women’s national team “Banyana Banyana” took part in for the first time. During the tournament Kgatlana announced her name with a stunning strike against Spain in the group stage.
The contract between Kgatlana and Eidbar is until the end of the upcoming season.
