On Thursday the FIFA Council officially awarded World Cup 2023 to the joint bid of Australia and New Zealand.
After the 2019 edition of the tournament was organised in France, Australia and New Zealand will now host the ninth edition of the women’s world championship in 2023.
The FIFA Council chose the duo before the Colombia bid, who are expected to run again in 2027. Previously Japan and Brazil withdrew their bids meaning FIFA had only Colombia and Australia & New Zealand left to choose from.
It is the first time that FIFA attributes the preparation of a major event to several confederations. New Zealand is under the Oceanic Committee while Australia the Asian organisation.
